Franklin Community Schools congratulates Cheryl Moran, who was named a National Middle Level Educator of the Year Finalist by the Association of Middle Level Education (AMLE).

Under her leadership, Custer Baker Intermediate School (CBIS) has become a model for excellence in middle-level education. Last year, the school completed a rigorous national review process measuring the implementation of middle-grade best practices and continuous improvement efforts. After advancing from the initial application phase, the school community participated in a series of stakeholder interviews with staff, students, and families, demonstrating a shared commitment to student growth and success. This process earned CBIS the distinction of being one of only 17 schools in the nation recognized as an AMLE School of Distinction.

Moran’s mission is centered on discovering what works best to meet the unique needs of middle-level learners. Her leadership is defined by a deep understanding of early adolescent development, a collaborative approach to problem-solving, and a passion for creating environments where every student feels known, valued, and challenged to grow.

“This is a wonderful honor,” CBIS Principal Cheryl Moran said. “The staff at CBIS works hard to do what is best for kids, and this is what earned my recognition!”

“This recognition is well deserved,” said Superintendent Dr. David Clendening. “Cheryl and her team have dedicated countless hours to transforming the school into a learning environment that truly reflects her vision of putting students first and providing them with an abundance of opportunities. They are making a tremendous impact.”

Moran was one of two exceptional runner-up finalists honored at AMLE’s 52nd Annual Conference for Middle Level Education on November 6.
