Franklin Community Schools is proud to announce that Webb Elementary School Counselor Angie Clendening has been named the 2027 Indiana Elementary School Counselor of the Year by the Indiana School Counselor Association.
Clendening was selected for the honor in recognition of her exemplary work as a school counselor, her innovative and data-driven approach to student support, and her unwavering commitment to helping students, families, and the school community thrive.
“She doesn't just meet high expectations in this profession; she sets them,” a member of the selection committee said. “Over a distinguished career, she has proven that when a data-driven program is paired with fierce, unconditional love for their students, the entire community thrives. She designs creative, research-backed programs to help our youngest learners build resilience, discover future possibilities, and feel ready to learn.”
Clendening’s comprehensive counseling program is built around the developmental needs of Webb Elementary’s K–4 students. Rather than simply responding to student needs as they arise, she uses data and student experiences to proactively develop programs and supports.
Among those initiatives is her “Body/Space Camp,” which helps students develop self-regulation skills, as well as targeted lunch groups for students navigating experiences such as divorce or military life. Her “Career Cafe” introduces third- and fourth-grade students to a variety of career paths while giving them opportunities to interact with members of the workforce and practice professional inquiry.
Clendening has also helped create opportunities for students to build leadership and communication skills through a partnership with the local Rotary Club. The resulting Webb Elementary Rotary Honorary Group gives students opportunities to participate in monthly meetings, develop adult communication skills, and complete a cumulative service project.
“Despite her heavy administrative load, Angie’s absolute priority remains 1:1 student connection,” said Webb Elementary Principal Carolyn Ray, who nominated Clendening for the award. “Whether she is processing a death or sorting out 4th-grade recess drama, Angie handles every situation with a delicate ease that builds a sacred relationship of trust.”
