The Lady Cubs basketball team used the holiday break to reach the 10 win mark for the first time since 2014 (11 wins that year). The stretch included a series of home games around a trip to Shelbyville.
The Franklin Community Swimming and Diving team kept things warm on Thursday, a cold December night, against the Mid-State Conference foe Martinsville. With the focus on preparing for the Johnson County Meet, the Grizzly Cubs had some stellar swims on their way to sweeping a pair of wins. The Lady Grizzly Cubs won 11 of the 12 events to mark a 128-58 win. The Men’s team swept the 12 events, resulting in a 127-49 win.
The Grizzly Cubs basketball team has embraced the “road warrior” mentality for the end of 2016 and beginning of 2017. After their home victory over Hauser on December 10, the Grizzly Cubs won’t return to their home court for a game until January 27.
The Grizzly Cubs are in the heart of their tournament season. With less than a month until the Sectional the team focus becomes preparing for multiple matches in the same day. On December 17, the Grizzly Cub Wrestlers travelled to Indian Creek for the annual Johnson County Tournament. Franklin went 2-2 on the day.
Coming off of the very competitive Hall of Fame Classic, the Grizzly Cubs hosted the Plainfield Quakers in a Mid-State Conference matchup. Both teams competed at the Hall of Fame Classic with Franklin coming out on top.
The Lady Cubs went 1-1 last week to move their season record to 6-6. Thursday evening the Grizzly Cubs hosted Bloomington North. The Lady Cubs used a strong first half shooting performance and then an outstanding 30 point third quarter to run away from the Cougars 70-39.
A season approaching a holiday break is always a unique time for a swim meet, as distractions can arise from excitement for the holiday season. On Tuesday night against visiting Columbus North, there weren’t many distracted athletes on the Franklin Community side. Franklin girls took 10 of the 11 events, while the boys managed to pull off 10 of the 11 events as well.
After dropping the County final to the Center Grove Trojans, the two teams were back on the court the following Tuesday evening for a regular season matchup. The Lady Cubs made good adjustments to keep the Trojans within reach early on, trailing just 25-21 at the half.
The defending Mid-State Conference champions had no time to work their way into the season. A young team that saw many of its top scorers graduate last year had to open up the season with a Mid-State Conference showdown with the Decatur Central Hawks.
The Lady Cubs basketball team entered the Johnson County tournament looking to snap a two-game skid. In the opening round they played host to Greenwood, the team that knocked them out of last year’s tournament.
The Franklin Community Girls’ swimming and diving team kicked off the season with a 153 – 69 win over county rival Center Grove. Franklin won all 12 of the 12 events to amass the 84 point victory, with big swims across the board from the Franklin underclassmen.
The Lady Cubs basketball team, under first year coach Josh Sabol, went on the road last week for its first two contests of the season. Last year, the Lady Cubs went 0-2, losing by a combined total of 4 points. This year however, the team came out firing on all cylinders ready to make up for last year’s slow start.
